Analogue States is a long-term, ongoing project. It’s not based on any particular theme, or focused on a specific place or places. These photographs have been taken over a period of fifteen years or more, were made in at least ten countries, and contain disparate subjects. What connects them is purely my motivation in taking them, which is simple: to return to taking photographs in the same way and with the same openness I did when I first picked up a camera as a child.
I used analogue cameras then, as that’s all there was. For me then, as now, a large part of the magic of photography was in not being able to see my images right away, not knowing if I got the shot; the mystery, anticipation, and finally the surprise when the film was developed.
A state of being I’m looking to return to and express.
