The works in ‘Flotilla’ are a meditation on the ever-growing environmental threat faced by humanity. With each new scientific report released on the state of the climate that sustains us, we are made aware of the consequences of political and corporate cowardice, dithering, and greed. Not that reports are necessary at this stage to show us what is already clear. As temperatures rise, and the ice caps which regulate our climate melt, extreme weather events – wildfires, floods, hurricanes – are becoming more frequent, and the precariousness of life on this planet is made painfully evident.
The photographs in ‘Flotilla’ invite the viewer into a limited palette of white and greys, and abstract, massed forms. While these depictions retain and reveal some of the texture and substance beneath, they also bring to mind ranks of icebergs. It is this dichotomy – confined vessels that could provide escape and the natural objects that could destroy them – that raises important questions about how our landscapes might be reformed, and whether our impending destruction may contain the seeds of our survival or our attempts at mere survival might lead to our destruction.
Time races on. Our potential escape routes melt in the rising seas. Either we find new ways to live, or the planet will find ways to live without us.
